Meet the President

Aug 7, 2019

By Lisa Rozmarniewicz, Director of Sales & Marketing, Capital Title Insurance Agency

You know him as the guy that likes to laugh and inject humor into everyday life, including his public speaking. Tom Lico, President and COO of Capital Title Insurance Agency first began doing open mic nights at local comedy clubs after taking a 6-week Comedy 101 class at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle. “It was 2009, and we were deep into the recession. There wasn’t much to laugh about,” he recalls. Each Tuesday night, he would meet with 4 or 5 other aspiring stand-up students from class where they would help each other prepare for “graduation class”, which consisted of a 5 to 6-minute stand-up routine. Since that graduation, comedy has been Tom’s “healthy distraction”.

In 2011, Tom was hired as the comedic entertainment at the Michigan Mortgage Lenders Association Conference. “This training has opened up opportunities to MC different events at the corporate level; if you work cheap, you work often.” Besides comedy, Tom enjoys travel, golf, travel with golf, and visiting professional sports’ stadiums and ballparks. He has been to 45 states and has watched over a dozen road games for the Detroit Tigers and Lions.

Professional Involvement
Besides his leadership role at Capital Title, Tom serves on the board of RSPRO, co-chairs the Title Company Group at Realty Alliance to plan their bi-annual meetings; and was one of the charter members on the Stewart Title Agent Advisory Board, where he served for 4 years. Tom is also on the Executive Committee of the Real Estate One Family of Companies, the #1 real estate brokerage in Michigan and 8th largest in the U.S. And now, after 5 years on the MLTA Board of Directors, Tom Lico is the new President of the Michigan Land Title Association (2019-2020).

2019-2020 Board Initiatives
In sitting down with Tom to discuss initiatives for the MLTA this coming year, he spoke about continuing to enhance the educational opportunities and building upon the success of the Spring Summit held for the first time in April 2019.
Another of his initiatives is the implementation of Remote Online Notary (RON). “We need to be ready to act when the Secretary of State releases the rules, regulations and approved platforms for RON, as the membership will be looking to us to help guide them through these unchartered waters,” Tom stated. He will be holding a kick-off meeting with committee chairs and co-chairs early Fall to discuss committee initiatives for the upcoming year.

In case you’re wondering, Tom’s first concert was Santana, the summer of 1980 at Pine Knob!
